Sonnet - Faith Contest Entry

That Step

by kiwisteveh

What does it take to make that step, a stride
so bold that courage seems too weak a name,
across the dark abyss a lifetime wide,
where serpents dance below, and I their game?

My fortitude deserts me where I stand
upon the brink and wrestle nameless fears,
while flocking, mocking, hard on either hand,
the screeching gulls of doubt assail my ears.

But lo, the slender thread of faith shines bright
entwined with love and patience, trust and hope.
A thousand craftsmen toiling through the night
could never manufacture such a rope.

What does it take but faith in love so pure?
With you to guide me, ev'ry step is sure.
