Ode To The Rainbow Caterpillar

Ode To The Rainbow Caterpillar

O' you with awkward, ambling gait, how splendidly you pose!
Should I believe a clownish worm will soar without those clothes?
Your many-coloured, segregated body plunks along,
an up and down beat kept in time as though you hear a song.

But then again, perhaps you do, God loves to see a dance -
though surely jigs will be more jaunty once you shed those pants!
At first I hardly dared have faith you weren't, in fact, a toy -
your glowing green, your pink and purple painted by some boy.

The yellow, though, is like the sun, the black like velvet night,
and heaven knows the Master's hand will always get it right.
When you emerge, a birth of sorts, from out your sheltered sleep,
the beauty of your graceful flight will make the angels weep!

O' you with hues as bold as brass, flaunt Nature's endless love -
you're aptly named, sweet butterfly, a promise from above
that rainbows always will appear; they celebrate the rain,
and caterpillar's slow demise is elegance's gain.

To see the Rainbow Caterpillar, you'd almost think it can't possibly be real, it is so brightly-coloured and ungainly, but the Rainbow Butterfly...ah... it is the most beautiful of butterflies! I had to choose: did I want to use the picture of the clownish caterpillar or the elegant butterfly...(sigh)...(decisions, decisions...)
