Defying Gravity

by mfowler

a child
a man walked on water and sank not
despite humans' tendency to drop
a miracle
a glib dismissal of the empirical?
when a bird is shot, it drops until it stops
so too must a man if he walks on water
unless He's Jesus
an explanation to ease us
into acceptance
because this was the Son of God
(faith was easy even if it seemed quite odd)
Jesus beached, that was preached, and I was reached
at evensong
young man
life, like a smorgasbord of doubts
feeds the curiosity of mind, and shouts
'He must have drowned'
science says there's a logic cavity
that gravity
would gird his sides and pull him down
no proof, no science without flotation appliance
a religious spoof
 (a story loved, soon satirical)
middle aged
life, like a map of criss-cross routes
shows the way to its bitter-sweet fruits
unsurpassed joy of family love
workplace tensions' push and shove
holidays in villas on the credit card
the death of a father (that's gotta be hard)
war brewing somewhere takes a son
a perception
that maybe life's not always fair for everyone
inside, a restlessness claws
scratching the comforts of those self-imposed laws
somehow revealing the man upon the sea
defying logic, gravity
(and seeking has begun)
older man
life, like a prism to the soul
refracts the wondrous colours of the whole
in moments quiet, reflective
a prayer, seeking perspective
wafts out on the breeze across suspicious seas
I see Him coming
calling out my name despite my youth's disdain
I'm on my knees - why me?
(I rely on gravity)
life, like a conundrum wrapped in mystery
and despite my sceptic's history
makes sense
(it's my defence)
I've learned to know it's Him upon the water
I've learned to stride out o'er the foam
He won't lead me, His precious lamb to slaughter
He'll take my hand and lead me home
