The Photograph

The Photograph

Beautiful the butterflies dancing in the breeze,
Their lives fading fast like the autumn of trees
With glee, so free, a destined destiny
As Grandmother's photograph smiles back at me
Think you, she knew, of her time to sleep?
Her words, Papa; ''my child, do not weep''

Perhaps, dear Jasmine; for strong was she
A love for the wild and all things free
A swan she once held in throes of death
A fisherman's choice, its life and breath
No tears or fears, when bowed in rest
Her kindred arms its final nest

Once, inquiring softly of wrinkles there be
She smiled at the photograph; '' wisdom is the key''
I looked at the image and asked, ''why not me?''
A tear left her eye; '' in time you will see''
Soon after, her spirit did depart this place
I made my wish, then, to rise to such grace

Then let us walk the path that she once trod,
Where berries grew rife and horses shod
Still broken, the gate, where she tapped a shoe
Such laughter that day in brambles that grew
Of our favorite tart, a moment she'd dwell
As fruit from her basket our hunger would quell

Crystallized years, yet no more lost tears
A photograph heavy as happiness bears
The bluebells still blue with apricots in view
For all in her nearness claimed a wondrous hue
And laughter still echoes through chambers of thought
As we smile with the memories, and so we ought

..And butterflies still fly through windows of dreams
for with them we live... or so it seems

...Yes, they do fly through windows of dreams
for with them we live...or so it seems

Poem of the Month contest entry

By all means read at least once without audio for a more personal understanding.
Best wishes.

a prickly scrambling shrub of the rose family, especially a blackberry.

This poem I dedicate to my friend and collaborator in music and composer, Kerri Powles. The Swan incident being a true event, a dedication to her mother.

Many thanks to my guest reader; F. Yasmin- alias, Jasmine, who worked hard, indeed, to complete the task.

In reference to Grandparents and Mothers the world over...long may they be recognized.
