Zulu, Ode to My Crown Crane

by michaelcahill

Yes, I really had one as a pet.

My pet list's long and varied too,
for
I've no sense at all.
A bark, a growl or mew, mew, mew,
my heart they do enthrall.
But I loved my Crane from Africa.
(she stood so straight and tall)

Her brain was small, as I recall,
could not outwit a fly.
She'd peck at one outside the window;
the fly would wonder why.
But with fierce determination,
she'd try and try and try.

She loved to follow butterflies.
She'd chase them round the yard.
She had no chance to ever catch one,
but daily she worked hard.

Though dumb as any fencepost standing,
I loved her through and through,
my lovely crane from Africa
from my own private zoo!
