A Gray Slant of Light

A Gray Slant of Light
-----------------------------------

It feels like I’m drowning

In this murky pond
A negative crowning
From darkness beyond

If only remembrance
Could conjure lost bliss
If only a semblance
Of nothing but this

In bed in dawn’s twilight
I dread light of day
The comfort of dark night
Is draining away

Before me the morning
And then afternoon
And then comes the warning
Of dusk’s pending gloom

My shrink pushes Prozac
He asks what I think
I answer with cognac
And all kinds of drink

I know that you’ve known me
I know that you care
But inside I carry
Such songs of despair

I watch and I wait here
In mid-light I dwell
Someday my soul might hear
A crack in my shell

But with me depression
Has nowhere to hide
This dreadful obsession
With what lies inside
