War's Pendulum

by Just2Write

War’s Pendulum

War – the bells of freedom cease to ring
The weight’s pulled back, then dropped to swing
Left… Right… Right… Left…
War’s pendulum starts swinging…
Right, left, right, left…
The knells from Hell are ringing.
Right… Left… Right… Left…
The pendulum is swinging…
Whoosh… Weight… Whoosh… Weight –
Murder, mayhem, muck and hate.
Whoosh… weight… Whoosh… weight –
Whoosh…  Wait… check for blood.
Children crying, daughters raped.
Dying soldiers, coffins draped;
the best of them lie in the mud.
Whoosh…  Wait
check for blood.
Momentum grows, it gathers speed,
the scent of death rides on the flood -
The dogs of war say there’s no need
to pray for peace.  It will not come.
The blade will cut, and you will bleed.
Whoosh…  wait. Check for blood.
Create the motion, plant the seed,
Accelerating… time for speed
Weight, inertia, pivot, greed,
Propel the spell of glory’s seed
Swish… swish…  swish… swish
The hawks of war now have their wish.
Then suddenly, amid the flood
you feel the blade strike with a thud.
Wait. Stop.
Check for blood.

Vers Libre - (French: 'free verse'), 19th-century poetic innovation that liberated French poetry from its traditional prosodic rules. In vers libre, the basic metrical unit is the phrase rather than a line of a fixed number of syllables, as was traditional in French versification since the Middle Ages. In vers libre, the lengths of lines may vary according to the sense of the poem, the complete sentence replaces the stanza as a unit of meaning, and rhyme is optional.

Vers libre appears to have been the independent invention of several different French poets in the late 1880s. Among its early advocates and theoreticians were Gustave Kahn, Jules Laforgue, and Edouard Dujardin.
