love's colors

The Rose Garden

by ArtGal

grandpa always knew
why roses bloomed
prolific in colors
of only yellow and red
love's colors he'd say

lying in his hammock
he'd write sweet poetry
salty tears would burn
eyes and mouth
how much longer
would grief consume
the all of him

a walk to the park
would silence him
he'd find a willow tree
to swallow the light
he begged for dark
needing obscurity

home before dusk
a perfect time
for watering roses
happy again
feeding fertile soil
to grandma's bones
we didn't know
of the betrayal
we didn't know
the lover
drowned in the sea

we didn't know
grandma was frozen
with their wedding cake
topped with yellow and red
roses -- of course
