Let the Rest Go

by krys123

After supper near evening
On a porch swing looking outward
My dad puffing on a corn pipe
And me just counting stars

His hand touched my shoulder
His voice quivered slow
"Keep what you can handle
And let the rest go"

Now 30 and still single
I played at some of the high life
Nashville, San Fran and old San Antone
Still counting the stars
And blessings he put on me
I realize now
I was what he let go
My dad's love had pride
But entangled by her going
A hurt held deeply inside
And now I'm knowing
Why he did all that he could
And let my mom go
My dad just said
"I had to let the rest go"
It hurt him so bad
In his dreams he would cry
I thought so sad
That she didn't even try

Now my boys counting stars
And I let my hand on him slow
Me telling of his grandpa
And how he let the rest go.....

No particular rhythm and consequent rhymes.
A story of a grandpa talking to his son
who later turns into a dad
talking to his own son.
I would like to thank Geokat for the lovely picture
"Starry Starry Night".
