A chapter in the book Favorite's
Doing It Hawaiian Style
by country ranch writer
Background What a surprise for Hawaii getting into the rodeo scene and doing so well with it. It has really caught on over there. So it just isn't swimming and surfing anymore. Look out world here comes rodeo! |
When you think of Hawaii, you think of sand, surf, pineapples, good looking girls in bikinis and great sunsets.
Hawaii, is it for surfers or do you think it's for Rodeo Cowboys? What did you say? Came from a man sitting beside them. Pete shook his head and said, "I think he was out in the sun too long." Ron Peters and Pete Baldwin were on assignment in Maui.
They had stopped to have lunch on the outskirts of town. They were sitting there, looking dumbfounded. The man beside them told them them the barkeep was a Hawaiian cowboy, but worked here on his time off and that they should go and ask him their questions. They finished their meal, stopping on their way out to talk to the barkeep.
The man at the bar said that what they heard was true. "He said, this is the year 2005 and Hawaii was facing some interesting changes." It will be the first time in history that the top ranked bull riding athlete's would compete on the island. The P.B.R. Is thrilled to be bringing the Professional Bull Riding to the Aloha state.
The first days there on the island they decided to get their boss to let them cover this event since they were already in Hawaii. The next few days were spent visiting historic ranches and being immersed in the Hawaii "Panolo" or their version of cowboy culture, and learned about the Hawaii heritage.
The event that was coming up was going to be the most exciting one of its kind. It was going to be spectacular in every way with fireworks, rodeo bullfighters and parades. For the first time ever in the history of Hawaii they will get a taste of the bull riders well know in the sport.
Ron and Pete were lucky enough to get a few minutes to talk to Chris Shivers. Chris Shivers said while he was there on the island, he would like to hold a clinic for the kids to learn to ride bulls and see how it is done cowboy style. Chris was extremely excited about it and the other riders agreed to pitch in and help with it.
While the top P.B.R. Riders Chris Shivers, Adrino Mores, Mike Lee and Jody Newberry would be there testing their skills. The P.B.R. Was sending to the big island of Hawaii in Kona, Shawn Willinghan and McKennan Wimberly. There would be a stock contractor on hand. They wanted to discuss with Hawaii Bull Breeders the ins and outs of establishing a P.B.R. Touring pro division in Hawaii.
After this is gone over so well and the PR. Was great for everyone involved, they decided to do some more rodeos in Hawaii.
P.B.R. Again held a competition on the Island of Maui in Hawaii. This one was hosted by the local cowboy by the name of Myron Duarte a pro bull rider. The turnout was the greatest and everyone was reading about it in the paper for days. The next one they decided to hold was an all star challenge.
All the P.B.R. Folks that were involved were overwhelmed with the big success of the rodeo, that was put on by the Aloha (Panolo) community. They all agreed it was the best trip that they had ever taken in their lives.
