A Mother in Pain

by Rubylou

A carefree girl runs in the meadow
Smooth cool feet wet with morning's fresh dew
Sweet flowers' perfume, the warming sun's glow
Melodies of the songbirds renew.

Now a young woman her dream just shatters
Opportunity slithers quickly away
The hope for her future left piled in tatters
Despair seeps deep with decay.

A mother of two, struggling to ignore
The searing pain that cuts in her soul
She weeps for direction and how to restore
Food for her children, her heart's only goal.

Slowly she touches her leathery cheek
As her neck becomes warm and wet
Hopeless and helpless she is reaching her pique
Young tears she will never forget.

Will she ever again smell the flowers?
Or hear the songbirds sing?
Will there be  laughter for even an hour?
Or will the pain continue to sting?
