Days gone by

by Sandra Stoner-Mitchell

I remember yesterdays
the ones eons ago
when I could play and have some fun
when lovely days went slow

I remember climbing trees
still dressed in Sunday best
and coming home with skirt all torn
and fruit stains on my vest

I remember Sunday teas
with bread my mother made
for sandwiches, then buttered scones
and home-made lemonade

I remember sunny days
and picnics by the sea
I remember going scrumping
from our neighbour's tree

I remember lots of things
the freedom we kids had
we'd play outside from dawn to dusk
have walks with mum and dad

Now the children sit in doors
they miss out on the fun
They play all day on games machines
and won't play in the sun

One day they will look back and say
I wish I had gone out to play...
