Skull Nailed to a Tree
Raymond Tobaygo

The sun had bleached the human skull white.

From beyond the tree a faint cracking of a twig, followed by absolute silence.

Pistol drawn, I moved back slowly. I searched the dense thickets of scrub pine and dwarf palms. Nothing stirred. I looked up, faint noises alerting me of an ambush.

I reached down and grabbed my boot knife with my left hand.

Within the thicket, movement slow, deliberate.

I pointed my pistol at the disturbance.

From the palms Wassian scavengers charged.
I fired twice, downing two, the third's neck sliced open by my knife.

I didn't see the fourth.
