Lunch
by rosehill (Wendy)
I guess I ate too much for lunch: two sandwiches, Hawaiian Punch, an apple, chips, six macaroons, a Twinkie, and some Lorna Doones, a pizza slice and pudding cup. I only stopped 'cause lunch was up. And now I'm here in history class, amazed how slow an hour can pass. The day is hot. Miss Ball's a bore. I hear her read aloud, "Four score..." and seven years each minute takes. The clock won't move. My stomach aches. The blood that should be in my head has gone to fight the food instead. my eyes are heavy, closing tight and though I try with all my might can't . . stay . . awake, my breathing's deep, head on my arms and fast asleep. While dreaming that the wall clock spoke with Miss Ball's voice, I feel a poke and hear a "Pssst. . ." and then my name. I jerk awake and to my shame my teacher's feet are all I see. She's standing right in front of me. I feel my face turn fiery red, I'm frozen and can't raise my head. Betsy Bernstein starts to giggle. (Through the floor I'd like to wriggle). I hear snickers, snorts and squeaking. Miss Ball stares at me, starts speaking. "While you work on your digestion would you answer my last question? Does our friend here, who's so quiet, know the answer; will he try it? Listen up class, did I mention it's polite to pay attention?" I look to Sherm, but he just sighs And shrugs his shoulders, rolls his eyes. I want to die. I want to weep. I can't believe I fell asleep. I only hope I didn't snore! I'm skipping lunch forever more! |
