Lucky New Year

by Belinda

Get rid of dust of yesteryear
Then you can gain your share of luck
To have a house so clean and clear
Get rid of dust of yesteryear
Feel free to greet the year with cheer
Your luck is there for you to pluck
Goodbye to dust of yesteryear
Enjoy your share of blessed luck

* In the Chinese calendar, the year of the dragon starts on January 23, 2012. Out of habit I cleaned my house with extra care the day before. As I did so, I remembered my late mother and how she had planted in me the tradition to have a thorough house cleaning before the lunar new year. She believed a clean house and a clean heart will bring us luck for the coming year.

* I wrote this in the form of a triolet with slight changes in the two final lines. The triolet consists of 8 lines, written in iambic tetrameter. The rhyme scheme is ABaAabAB, with the capital letters designating which lines are repeated, so that the first line is repeated as lines 4 and 7, and the second line is repeated as line 8. I hope I did this right.
