The night is almost perfect - but not quite.
While A Winter Storm Passes Outside

I sit up in bed wide awake watching you sleep beside me in the dimly lit room. Comforted as always by the steady rhythm of your breathing, I am remembering unhappy times before you when I sat alone on winter nights waiting for someone else, not knowing he lay in other arms. Loving your face, I let my eyes caress your forehead— traveling downward over broad shoulders and strong muscled arms. The hall light’s reflection catches the gleam of the golden wedding band you have promised to wear and honor forever. After all these years, my heart still stirs at the familiar lines of your body outlined beneath the sheets. Midnight snowflakes are quiet outside the bedroom window while minutes change soundlessly on the nightstand’s digital clock. Reaching out, I shut off the alarm before it shatters the silence of the almost perfect moment, but soon I must wake you and send you home to someone else. |
