My Father and Mother's Last Goodbye

Ice Chips and Puckered Lips

by Katiesherrill

Sitting at his bedside
Not ready to say goodbye,
Forty years of marriage
Wasn't supposed to fly.
Cancer shows up like a thief in the night,
Stealing minutes, days, and years.
Now every word and touch,
Is a blessing mixed with tears.

Every word they speak is of eternity
And when they'll meet again.
Conversations spoken way too soon,
She's not ready to lose her best friend.
They were waiting for retirement
And fishing by the lake.
Now they pray for one more day,
There are no more plans to make.

Holding her hand he tightens his grip,
So many unspoken signs of their love.
Not yet in their golden years,
This should be the time they dreamed of.
His eyes are almost dark,
They only see his bride.
Giving her a smile she knows so well,
Even death's shadow cannot hide.

Looking into eternity
With heavy hearts they pray.
Hand in hand and with bowed heads
They know just what to say
God take care of my spouse,
My partner, my better half
Please fill the time that we're apart
With memories of when we laughed
Death is not forever,
It's just an end to the body's pain
We'll meet again at heaven's gate,
In my heart 'till then you'll remain.

Lovingly feeding him ice chips
He leans his head to the side
She bends down to kiss her love,
With puckered lips they say goodbye.

This is a true story. I watched my father say goodbye to my mom with a kiss. It was beautiful and sad.

The picture is of my parents, this past October, on the porch of their newly purchased retirement home. My father was diagnosed with cancer weeks after this was taken. He passed away 77 days afer he was diagnosed.

I purposely end the last stanza with only two lines.
