A chapter in the book Blessed is the Fragile Heart
She's almost down to her last cigarette.
Extinguished in this smoke-filled cabaret,
she has no clue if it is night or day;
and knows she's truly there by choice, and yet...
Her soul is heavy, filled with lead regret.
She's idle, while life's dance has waltzed away.
Each glass is full with heart-ache and dismay.
There's not enough martinis to forget.
If only one could understand the dread
That tangles in her mind between the shows,
She dangles like a puppet on a thread
while toasting love and where all romance goes.
Like puffs of smoke with so much left unsaid,
her life unwinds, this bar's about to close.
