The ending of my second short story
Broken Ties (finale)
by dragonpoet
Katie motioned for Tommy to start. So his preamble, with an impish grin, was, "I will start when I left my cabin and your mom will pick up the story when she fell into my arms." Then he launched into his part of the story. He seemed accustomed to being a storyteller, making many comic faces throughout his recitation. After saying, "I jumped up," he pointed to Katie.
Sean listened carefully and watched both of them intently. He seemed unsure about his mom's seeming comfort with this strange man, although he also found it hard to hide his blushes and giggles as he listened.
By the time the story was over all of their stomachs were growling. Both Sean and Tommy looked at Katie and scolded, "Don't get up!", before Katie could move from the couch to make dinner.
Katie laid back down as Sean said, "I can make sandwiches, if Tommy thinks it is time for him to leave."
Tommy shook his head asking, "Do you think she will get up again if I leave now?"
When Sean nodded he said, "There probably is enough daylight left for me to stay and cook something. Then you can make sure your mom plays the perfect patient. If it gets too dark, I can use the flashlight I saw by the door on my way home." Sean agreed with a frustrated nod and then sat down opposite his mom at the coffee table and turned on the TV.
"There's some fish I caught in the freezer.", Sean informed Tommy.
Tommy found the fish and some fries in the freezer. While the fries baked, he defrosted the fish in the microwave and then sauteed it in butter, garlic and other seasonings.
When dinner was ready, Sean went to help Tommy bring it from the kitchen to the den. With dinner and drinks on the coffee table, Tommy and Sean carefully edged Katie down to the floor replacing a pillow under her ankle. Tommy had poured the last of a bottle of wine for him and Katie. Not knowing what Sean liked, Tommy let him pick his own drink. To Tommy's surprise, Sean picked Diet Coke.
Tommy looked oddly at Sean asking, "What, no sugar?"
"Remember my dad was a doctor," Sean shrugged, "Also, one of my uncles is a dentist. So, when we are allowed to drink pop, it is only diet. If you look closely all those different brands of pop are diet too."
"What a tough life."
Sean smiled slyly and added, "Not, really. I tried some regular pop at a friend's house and found it too sweet, so I let someone else have it."
About an hour later with Katie back on the couch as comfortable as she could be, Tommy decided it was time for him to go. He asked, "Is it okay with you two if I come back tomorrow to check on the patient?"
When they both nodded, he turned to the door. Before he closed it, he yelled over his shoulder, "See you tomorrow afternoon then"
Together the both echoed, "Bye, see you tomorrow"
***************
He closed his cabin door on a purple edged sunset. After taking a shower, he got into bed and began watching TV. He woke the next morning with the television still on. He got dressed, turned it off, ate a quick brunch, and left the cabin out the back door .
Tommy had barely finished knocking before it open. Sean opened it looking none too happy. "Hi, there Tommy. Could you please get Mom to stay lying down? She refused to let me make sandwiches for us. She said she had to cook."
He looked up and saw Katie finishing her pancakes and sausage at the coffee table.
Tommy looked at both of them and stated, "As soon as she is done, I'ill have her back on the couch. I'ill sit on her if I have to, so she stays there."
She glared at both of them and replied rebelliously, "I am done, I will bring these dishes back to the kitchen."
Tommy and Sean screamed together, "No you will not!" Sean looked at Tommy and Tommy continued, "We'll get you back on that couch and Sean will put the dishes in the sink. I'ill stay here and make sure you don't move your ankle."
Sean nodded in agreement. But before he left, Tommy pointed at the food he brought with him and asked Sean to put it away for him.
Sean returned looking exasperated. He complained, "I was going to go fishing, but I couldn't leave Mom alone. She would never stay on the couch. I already had to re-wrap her ankle because she had to take a bath last night. I think that all her moving made it swell more. We have been here a week and we are running out of food."
Katie whined, "I want to be outside too. This couch is boring."
With a grin to soften his words, Tommy said, "You sound like a three year-old. But, maybe we can find a way for you to be outside. I want to be outside to use the pool. Before you say anything Katie, I sound like a whining toddler too."
Sean looked deep in thought, then he jumped and ran to the back of the cabin. He came back smiling and rolling a desk chair into the room.
Both Katie and Tommy looked at the chair smiling. Katie said, "You're a genius, Sean." Tommy blinked at Katie and did a dramatic bow saying, "Your chariot awaits ma'am."
Tommy and Sean rolled Katie to the pool deck and got her situated with her foot pillowed on a chair across from her.
When she was comfortable Tommy turned to Sean and said, "Thanks for the help. Now, go on. I'ill take care of your mother. Go catch our dinner," he encouraged, "But, remember if you don't, we have hamburgers to grill."
As soon as Sean was out of sight, Tommy said, "Lucky I wore my bathing suit," and started taking off his shirt.
Katie half jokingly whistled and ogled saying, "What a show you're giving me. I wasn't ready for it. I almost want to get up and clap, but then you would scold me for using my ankle."
Tommy bowed to Katie say, "My lady, I am glad this servant can so please you. Although, I don't deserve such praise because I am so out of shape."
"Every servant of mine should be so out of shape," Katie replied.
Between two and three hours later Sean returned with enough cleaned and boned filet's on ice to feed all of them. During that time Katie and Tommy got to know each other. He learned that, in fact, Katie's husband had been killed while working for Doctors Without Borders. His town had been raided. Katie learned about his break-up with Char.
Tommy took the bucket of fish from Sean and looked at him in surprise saying, "I didn't know you were a professional fisherman."
"Th-thanks, but I.. I am not a professional," Sean blushed and stuttered, "Mom and Dad were just good teachers. I was afraid that if I didn't clean these that we would have another fight on our hands because Mom would insist on doing all the work."
"Good planning son,' Tommy complimented and continued, "I'ill cook since you caught. You stay here and guard your mother since you know she can't be left alone." He laughed lightly to let Katie know he was half teasing.
After dinner of breaded fish and fries was cleaned up, Katie asked to be rolled into the bathroom so she could wash up and brush her teeth. Tommy complied and supplied support so she could stand without putting undo weight on her ankle.
When they were done, Tommy rolled Katie back to the den where they played cards until it was Katie's second deal. Then Tommy said it was time for him to leave.
Katie asked if he could roll her into the bedroom before he left. As he came up behind her to do the honors, Tommy whispered in her ear, "Is that an invitation?"
Laughing she stated regally, "No it is an order. I will also have Sean place the clothes I plan to wear tomorrow on the bed, so I won't have to walk around tomorrow."
When he was sure Katie was comfortable, he just said, "Good idea, my lady. Be back tomorrow."
Katie got the last word in, "I'll have my other servant roll me to the couch tomorrow when I am ready. Good bye."
The next couple of days, they followed the same schedule. Tommy always brought something to grill just in case Sean caught nothing or they didn't want to have fish. On Friday night, Katie told Tommy that Sunday she and Sean were leaving because Sean had to go to a week long sports camp on Monday. They agreed that on Saturday night, Tommy would make a steak dinner. By then Katie's ankle would be strong enough for her to help with the preparations.
That afternoon, Tommy showed up with a couple of boxes. The makings for a steak dinner complete with potatoes and the fixings. Also, a bottle of wine and a six pack, depending on what Katie decided, and for Sean he had the ingredients for milk shakes. Also, he had
home-made chocolate cookies for desert.
During their afternoon chat while Sean was fishing, they decided to keep in touch. They exchanged numbers so they could talk, but chose not to date yet. Both of their hearts weren't healed enough to start a new relationship. Tommy's heavy work schedule would also make it impossible to schedule anything anyways.
When Sean returned with his fish, Katie decided to wrap it up and give it to Tommy for a thank you gift. They all enjoyed preparing and eating their good-bye dinner feast. Then played some more cards.
When it came time to leave, Tommy and Katie hugged each other and Sean shook Tommy's hand and said, "Hope to see you soon."
This surprised both adults, because even though he acted part of the group, it always seemed like Sean seemed uncomfortable about seeing his mom with another man. Tommy heartily said, "Me too, Sean, me too."
While walking home, Tommy realized something had loosened up in Sean while they were making dinner tonight. He thought that maybe, in time, Sean might accept him as a possible boyfriend for his mother. This made Tommy smile.
After about 6½ months of bi-weekly phone conversations, Tommy said, "Well , I am now between jobs. I have 2 weeks before my new job starts. Would you feel ready for a date? Would Sean be okay with it?"
Thinking about it for about a minute, Katie could hardly answer through her giggles, "I think I'm ready for a date." At the word 'date', Sean started nodding his head. Katie continued, after catching her breath, "Sean is nodding like a bobblehead. I think that means the sooner the better."
"So, how about dinner and a movie tomorrow, Katie?"
"Sounds, great. Sean can handle being alone for a little while. Are you coming on your white stallion?"
"No you're slave can only handle an Alfa Romeo"
"See you tomorrow around 6 then."
"That's perfect."
That night, he was reading in bed. Something he hadn't done in years. His mind was wandering. Though just over 6 months ago his life was falling apart, now it had totally turned around. He now had a new job and, possibly, a new relationship. He knew more about Katie, before their first date, than he knew about Char after two years. He marked his book and went to sleep with a smile on his face.
