The endangered Giant Panda Bear dines almost entirely on bamboo shoots. Sometimes he will also eat small amounts of fish and rodents. Bamboo is low in food value and calories so Pandas may eat for up to fourteen hours a day. Baby Pandas are fully weaned from their mothers by the time they are 4 to 5 months old so they start munching on bamboo very early in life. Pandas do not hibernate because, due to their low cal diets, they cannot put on enough fat to sustain them through a hibernation period.
