Moving In

by Karen Cherry

Background
Walter is a serial killer in the making

Walter had plans for today. They did not involve mother dear.  He was going to forget her today.  He needed precision.

He was setting up his basement home  and clinical testing facility today. He actually felt some emotion, it was close to happiness he thought. How odd.

Walter had arranged for deliveries to be set up every hour from 7am to 3pm.  He was lucky that his boss Fritz had given him flexible time for his work, so he could take care of his personal business. After he feeds and waters mother dear he will go to the butcher shop and work till midnight or so.

As he walked into this new place, this place that was just his and his alone, he felt a bit of that happiness again. He had never had a place that was just his. Things that were just his that he selected solely to please himself. It was an odd sensation.

The first thing he noticed was the metallic smell. Most surfaces were metal  and easy to clean and sanitize. The floor was varnished cement, also easy to clean. There were several drains in the floor which fed directly into the building plumbing. Taxidermists drain animals to rid themselves of various fluids, so no surprises.

The basement home had some furniture and equipment left behind which came in rather handy for him.  Two hefty size freezers to hold animals in. They are big enough to hold an elk minus the antlers. He had ordered a stand up freezer for organs and smaller things.

One thing he considered a must was several generators. Just in case. It would not do to be in the middle of removing one's brain and have all the power go out. He also ordered  heavy duty pressure mats. He learned that from working as a butcher. Standing in one spot for hours takes a toll.  He watches and he learns.

7am. First delivery! His work tables, knives, saws, and all the tools for dismemberment. Microscopes and other machines to aid his scientific research. Metal shelving, a metal desk,  and the pressure mats and generators. He would assemble the work tables first.

8am. Hardware delivery. Hanging hooks, and a special tub built for dissolving large animals into nonspecific sludge.  Lots of plastic wrap. Several different thicknesses.  Hammers, screwdrivers, nuts and bolts of varying sizes. Nails, screws, saws, rulers and yardsticks (metal of course). Brooms. Mops, buckets, ropes of all types, he must see what works best.  Metal pans and bowls for placing the bits and bobs in. And let us not forget, a wet-vac. He is sure he did not think of everything needed from the hardware store, but he had enough to start with.

9am Cleaning supplies and liquids. They turn a body to sludge chemicals. Bleach, Pinalen, The clean up after murder chemicals, Luminol, Comet, Cleaning brushes of many sizes. Hand held brushes. Scrubbing brushes. Metal dustpans. Sponges, scouring pads. Brillo pads for stubborn bits. And filters for all vents.

10am Appliances big and small. Stand up freezer (Restaurant- style), and a regular one for the kitchen. Two refrigerators one restaurant size and one with ice and water for the kitchen.  A business size microwave for the clinic and a regular one  for the kitchen. An oven with gas burners. 2 sets of washers and dryers. One for the kitchen and one for work. Three blenders. Two for the office and one for the kitchen. Two toaster ovens, a rice cooker, a toaster,  and two slow cookers. One jumbo size, one two quart.

11am Furniture for work and living quarters.  Three glass and wood cabinets for the lab. Six sets of wooden shelving for the living room. One four seater kitchen table.  With chairs. Two recliners and two end tables. One couch. Two floor lamps and two table lamps for the living room.  One queen size bed, two night tables, two small lamps for reading. One small desk , two chests of drawers. Two rolling desk chairs.

Noon.  Office depot supplies, four laptops, with all the hookup equipment needed. Mouses, memory sticks, two desk lamps. Two dozen cameras for inside and outside taping. Copy machine, Shredder, pens, papers, paper clips, scissors, and all the usual stationery needs.  A dozen disposable phones.

1pm Misc. Stuff from Target like bedding, coffee system,  waffle iron, and other things.

2pm  Walmart Delivery. All the dishes, pot and pans, cookie sheets, baking pans. Silverware, Cooking utensils, dishes, glasses, mugs, bowls of all sizes, kitchen and bath towels. Big, medium, and small trash containers. Tablecloths and place mats. Light bulbs, batteries, etc.

3pm. Groceries from the H.E.B. grocery store.

He will miss stuff, but this will more than get him started.  He also called Metal Magic who made the lab here, and they are working out what size and what  type of lab he wants for the ranch.

He has got a lot done, but he is nowhere near finished. But,he is done for the day. He will go back and feed and water mother dearest and take a short nap.

Well, she was not expecting him back.  He brought her KFC, her favorite. He had texted her he was coming and she never responded. When he asked her why she didn't answer, she stared dumbly at him and said, "it kept making noises. I didn't like it," as if that explained it.

He could swear she smiled with the corners of her mouth, but maybe he was just tired. She thinks he has been working on the ranch.

He told her she needs to pick her paint colors by Friday. The remodel was small; they just added on to the bedroom to make it a master in suite bath.  Also the kitchen was made larger to make room for a stove. And they added a wrap around screened in porch.  She seemed to take in that information just fine.

She was alert enough to show him the furniture she had picked for her house. Once she did that, she glazed over again as if that took all the brainy parts of her brain and she needed to recharge. He didn't know if this was normal or not.

And today, he was too tired to give her much thought.

He set his alarm and slept for two hours.  As he was heading out the door to work, she said "Walter, you are a good son." Then, all her lights went off again.
