A shameless promotion for my new club

O Meter! My Meter!

by Jim Wile

O Meter! My Meter! It’s you I must obey,
for rhyming isn’t quite enough in poetry to say
the things I want to render in the manner I prefer.
To all those poets who eschew my friend, I must demur.
      But damn! damn! damn!
          O the arguments I hear—
              “It’s far too difficult for me;
                  I have a rotten ear.”

O Meter! My Meter! I will stay true to you.
I will encourage others to attempt to try you too,
for I’ve devised a brand-new club called “Poetry with Meter.”
I’m hoping it will help to make our poetry completer.
      Hear Meter! dear Meter!
I’ll try to do you proud
              in hopes that beauteous poetry
will shine forth nice and loud.

Thanks to Walt Whitman and his poem "O Captain! My Captain!" which this poem attempts to mimic.

In case you missed my advertisement last week for my new club, the Poetry with Meter Club, it just started a few days ago, and we're on lesson 1. There will be a weekly lesson on how to add meter to your poetry to make it sound more polished and professional. Check it out on the Clubs page.
