A Story About Gun Control.
Gun Control? Really?
by Harry Craft
Gun control, gun control, gun control! It seems like that is all we hear these days on the television. In Orlando, Florida, the first four or five local news stories every night are about shootings. Yes, that’s right shootings. However, you won’t see any homicide rates published anywhere because that will scare off all the tourists! Orlando is tourist mecca!
They are opening five new parks at Universal on Thursday, May 22, 2025. Do you think Disney wants to mention gun control? Of course not. Would you want to ride the roller coaster if you knew there would be bullets flying around? Well, there have been some shootings at Disney too in the past.
Gun control is a set of laws that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer or use of firearms by civilians. In the United States, the term gun control is considered politicized. Gun control advocates like to use the term “Gun violence prevention,” “gun safety,” and “common-sense regulation” to describe their objectives.
However, most countries allow citizens to own guns. Some have firearms laws to prevent misuse or violence. There are restrictions for ownership of guns with certain characteristics, and a mandatory gun safety course is required. Then you must obtain a firearms license to own a gun.
However, these measures are not enough and never will be to stop the wrong people from getting guns. I watched a man in Liberty City, Florida, just outside of Miami one sunny day, and he was standing on a street corner next to a Popeyes Chicken restaurant waving an AK-47 Kalashnikov automatic weapon in the air to try and sale to some passer-by in a car.
So, gun control you say. It will never happen in the U.S. People here love their guns and outlaws will always get guns somehow. In every major city in America, you can buy almost any gun you want out of the trunk of a car from certain individuals, and that is a fact. I have seen it myself.
Some countries such as Iraq, Yemen, Pakistan and the United States are considered permissive jurisdictions when it comes to guns. In some countries, such as Australia or the U.S., measures can be implemented at the national, state, or local levels. Mexico and the U.S. have constitutionally protected gun rights.
The Second Amendment (Amendment II) to the United States Constitution protects the right to keep and bear arms. It was ratified on December 15, 1791, along with nine other articles of the United States Bill of Rights. And the Supreme Court has affirmed that the right belongs to individuals, for self-defense in their home. Of course, there are restrictions for the possession of a firearm for felons and people that may have a mental illness.
However, that still has not stopped people from shooting up schools, shopping malls, restaurants, and anywhere else that one may want to shoot.
I was introduced to weapons when I was four years old. My grandfather took me rabbit hunting with him, and he carried a 12-gauge shotgun. I started shooting weapons at that age. I had my own rifle when I was 14. I served more than 27 years in the military and fired .45 pistols, M-16 rifles, M-60 machine guns, rocket launchers, etc., and to this day I have never shot anyone. So, I am a true believer in the education of weapons and how to properly use them. I don’t believe gun control is the answer because a gun cannot kill someone by itself. Have you ever watched a weapon pull its own trigger? Of course not. It will not happen. The answer must be education.
People will always cry gun control, but it will never happen in the U.S. The constitution would have to be re-written, and amendments added, etc. I don’t think the congress, or the president want to tackle that issue, and may never.
People today don’t want their children to play with guns, or be cowboys and Indians, or play army because they are afraid their child might grow up to shoot somebody. Well, in there lies the problem. The guns don’t kill people. People kill people, someone must pull the trigger on that weapon to make it fire.
I guess we could lock all the people up, then they could not use a weapon lol! We know that is not the answer. I played army as a child, and I had every weapon known to man. I had toy rifles, pistols, grenades and I even got a bazooka for Christmas one year! I have never shot anyone! So, its alright to let your children play army and cowboys and Indians. I made a career out of the military and became an officer and made a good living.
So, every time I hear gun control, I turn a deaf ear because I know that is never going to happen. No one will ever take my guns because then I would be defenseless to protect myself or anyone else.
I know this is a very controversial issue in this country and there may be people that don’t agree with my opinions and that is alright. I understand. However, ask yourself. Do you really think gun control will work in this country? I think not.
