A Motto to Follow.

The Soldier's Creed.

by Harry Craft

I was always proud of my military career. I joined 10 days after high school and headed to Fort Dix, New Jersey for Infantry boot camp. I was not a famous general and I didn’t win the Medal of Honor.

However, I still did what I thought was right and served my country. Yes, I was called many different names and told I should not join the Army because they were baby killers.

Of course, these name callers were usually people who did not join the military. Maybe they could not pass the test or the physical or just did not want to join. To each his own.

However, there was one thing we were taught from day one in boot camp and most people do not know this.

While Memorial Day is fast approaching, I thought this would be a good time to put this out there for those of us who have lost loved ones defending our country so that the rest of us may live in peace.

The Soldier’s Creed is something we had to learn from day one in boot camp and we were tested on this by our drill instructors. They would come around and ask us to repeat a line or two and we had to know this, or we had to do push ups or run around the platoon looking like a fool.

So, here goes, the Soldier’s Creed:

I am an American Soldier.

I am a Warrior and a member of a team.

I serve the people of the United States

and live the Army Values.

I will always place the mission first.

I will never accept defeat

I will never quit.

I will never leave a fallen comrade.

I am disciplined physically and mentally

tough, trained and proficient in my tasks

and drills, I always maintain my arms,

my equipment and myself. I am an expert

and I am a professional. I stand ready to

deploy, engage, and destroy the enemies

of the United States of America in

close combat. I am a guardian of freedom

and the American way of life.

I am an American Soldier.

This belongs to the United States Army, but I felt like this time of year it needed to be seen. With everything that goes on in the world, we should still respect our military members because they live by this creed daily while protecting our freedom. Every branch of service has their own creed. I felt this would go well with Memorial Day.
