Happy Harvey

by JLR

Happy Harvey hippity hopped happily
along the hilly trail, hoping to harvest
some noon-time morsels of garden delights.
Aware that hidden, unseen, within the gardener’s
garden huffing, puffing, stumbling, bumbling
was a protective bull dog – named Puggrub.

Puggrub, loved, lying by the garden lights
surrounding the fast-growing delights.
Inhaling the tempting smells of the garlic,
rhubarb, hot peppers, spicy basil, and mint
all the things that Harvey did not desire one bit!

But so inviting to Harvey were all the vegetables
that Harvey loved and were edible.

Growing in the far corner of the garden
a long way from where Puggrub prowled
growing plentiful were orange carrots and lettuce,
leafy delights, like kale, romaine lettuce, spinach,
and dandelion greens.

So happy Harvey and Puggrub seldom, if ever,
crossed paths in the gardener’s garden, allowing
Harvey too often nibble. Filling his tummy.
He found lunchtime meals yummy!
