Bats

by Cecilia A Heiskary

Bats are on the endangered list
They are good for pollinating, what a twist
They have declined at a rapid rate
Disease is one reason for their fate

Humans contribute to the threat
They make choices without regret
Destruction of their homes
Forces the bat to have to roam

Bats eat up to 3,000 bugs a night
When will we learn and get it right
They are the sole pollinator of agave plants
Let this be the end of my rant

We humans will drive them extinct
We will be screwed if we don't get the hint

Several species of the bat are on the endangered list

Bats save over a one billion dollars in crop damage every year.

Diet-beetles, flies, moths, mosquitoes, nectar, and fruit

Threats-Habitat loss, fragmentation of the forest, persecution, pesticides, disturbances
to roosting and hibernation areas, wind turbines, and disease (white-nose
syndrome-a fungus)

The white nose syndrome-fungal disease decimated bat population, some species up to 90%. There have been over 5 million bats that have succumbed to this disease. One of the hardest hit species, Northern long-eared bats have been hit particularly hard from in.
