Sudden Comfort

by Marc Davidson

Today, as Robyn
sat by the open window
the extraordinary happened.
A little cardinal
in its bright red robes
flew in and sat on her shoulder,
moving its beak
gently back and forth
along her neck
as if to comfort her.
Then, as Robyn suddenly smiled,
it flew away; mission accomplished.

A dear friend lost her husband recently. This poem was fully formed in my head when I woke up one morning so I wrote it down and sent it to her. She liked it.
