At the Foot of the Cross

I stood upon the wind swept hill
Where the silence screamed as time stood still.
The sky was bruised, a weeping gray
As if all heaven had turned away.
The crowd had thinned, the jeers had died
Yet still He hung, arms open wide.

The wood was rough, the nails ran deep
His blood ran down in crimson weep.
A crown of thorns upon his brow
Each thorn a sin, I felt it now.
The sky grew dim, the veil was torn
As sorrow pierced the world, forlorn.

His eyes, oh God, those burning eyes
Not filled with rage, but love that cries.
They found me in the trembling crowd
Though I was silent, sins spoke loud.
His skin was torn, his side bare
And yet he held me in his stare.

I saw the lashes, each one mine
The hammer fall, the cursed sign.
The earth began to shake and moan
Creation cried, "He dies alone."
But deeper still, beyond the pain
He bore the weight, he broke my chain.

The veil was torn, the graves awoke
The final world in thunder spoke.
"It is finished," clear and bold
The greatest love this world's been told.
No angel's song, no poet's pen
Could tell what happened there and then.

And as his head began to fall
He whispered, "Child, I've paid it all."
A shiver danced along my spine
I wept beneath the Mercy sign.
And now I live, forever changed
By Jesus, on the cross estranged.

Not from love, but sin and shame
All buried now beneath His name.
So when I doubt, or when I stray
I walk again to Calvry's day.
And feel the nails, the thorn, the loss
And thank my King upon the cross.
