The rewards of Spring cleaning

Annual Event

by Rachelle Allen

What’s beneath the kitchen chair?

Doggie kibble! Dust motes! Hair!

How about between the grout?

Caked-on sludge that bulges out!

Now let’s look inside the fridge.

Moldy meatloaf! Gray cabbage!

Near the catbox, on the floor,

Small brown clumps and sand galore!

Time to check the basement rugs.

Damp and slimy! (Smells like slugs.)

Schmutz and cobwebs on display.

Dust so thick, it looks like clay!

What is with these myst’ry stains?

What is crawling out our drains?

We must grab our mops and brushes!

Sanitizing toilet flushes!

We must work the whole day long!

Valiantly! With GUSTO! Strong!

We’ll use scrubbies, vacuums, too.

Top to bottom, through and through.

This Spring cleaning gig will be

A bonding time for you and me.

We will set each room aglow!

(Friends will visit now, you know?)

No more germs and nothing dirty.

Cleanliness makes me feel flirty!

Come with me; you’ll get a treat.

All I ask: Don’t splotch the sheet.
