Orchestra of the Rain

by Verna Cole Mitchell

The orchestra of the rain
Plays selections of all varieties -

Sometimes, brushstrokes from the drum
Tap on the roof a calming lullaby
With invitation to those abed
To settle into peaceful sleep.

Sometimes, crooning a love song,
The saxophone renders romance
In mellifluous, lyrical tones
To sweet-smelling blossoms and buds.

Sometimes, for a playful tune,
The guitar solos with the orchestra
With a melodic plunking
In a steady, rhythmical beat.

Sometimes, the violin,
Accompanied by wind's shrill whistling,
Performs in strident syllables
The eeriest of compositions.

Sometimes, the trombone
Leads the way to worship
With a shower of praise notes
From a majestic hymn.

And sometimes, all the instruments
Join together in a storm of sound
To play a classical masterpiece,
Varying in volume
From near silence
To a faint pattering,
Then rising to a crescendo,
With trumpets blaring
And a thunder of drums
Pounding staccato vibrations.

Over all, the magnificent Conductor
Directs to perfection every note.
