The Exceptional Teacher

by Rachelle Allen

My mentor, my "True Mom," my friend,
At ninety, now, what's round the bend?

Your memory falters, your speech somewhat slurred,
But oh, how I treasure your every word.

You made me the teacher I'm so proud to be
You always-but-always showed great faith in me.

You taught by example, so patient and kind:
Learn from your students, lean into their mind.

You bolstered my spirit when dark days set in
And helped me replenish my strength from within.

The bulk of my vict'ries, I claim thanks to you,
Your love and your laughter and friendship, true blue.

I hate that you're feeling the treadmarks of time
But please know, to me, you are still in your prime.

Thank you for seeing what I could not see:
My worth and my measure and what I could be.

You gave me a present, which I always share:
Each student is special, so show them you care.

I was five months pregnant when I met my mentor, Ann, who was the Master Teacher when I was student teacher. I learned more in those four months in her classroom than I did at any other time in my life. She embodied what being a tremendous educator is all about, and to this day, forty-three years later, I continue to strive to live up to her example. It wasn't lost on me, for even the briefest of moments, what a supreme gift it was to be on the receiving end of her tutelage.
