Furious Fiction competition - Australia
Lost But Found
by Dick Waters

Thump
I’m so sorry. But what are you doing on the floor?
The diamond in my engagement ring fell out.
Can I help you find it?
Yes, that would be very helpful.
Can I see the setting, please.
You can tell by the size of it, that it’s not that valuable. I don’t think he spent much for it.
Let’s stick to trying to find it. I’m going to push every floor button.
My god, it’s very bright in here now.
Well, there are over a hundred floors in the building.
Do you work in the Empire State building?
I did until last week. I’m just picking up some personal stuff I left in my office.
What a good idea about stopping at every floor. Not many people ride between floors.
Why don’t we use our phone flashlights to see if that helps.
You’re very nice to do this for me. What’s your name?
Kevin, and yours?
Marsha. I’m so embarrassed about this. You would have thought they would have replaced the shag carpet by now.
Laughter
I’m trying not to notice your low-cut blouse.
It’s okay. Maybe it’s a reward for your helping me? I also like your aftershave. Paul should wear some.
I’ll do my best to pay attention to what we’re doing and focus on the rug.
Whoosh
What’s happening here?
She lost something and we’re trying to find it.
I’ll take another elevator, since you have all those floor buttons lit up.
Thanks.
Marsha, are you sure the diamond was in the ring when you came in here?
Now that you mention it… no, I’m not sure.
Well, I’ll help you and get my stuff when we come back down.
Speaking of your stuff. Why aren’t you working here anymore?
I’ve opened my own consulting business closer to home in New Jersey. You look very nice in that outfit, which floor do you work on?
I don’t work here. I was coming here for an interview. Sh*t. It was back on the nineteenth floor.
What position were you applying for?
Administrative assistant.
Isn’t that interesting. I’m in the need for one. Would you be interested in working in NJ?
I live there, in Parkridge.
Very interesting.
Why?
I live in Montvale, but my office is in Parkridge.
That’s interesting.
Do you believe in fate?
Yes. I found the diamond.
That’s too bad.
Why?
I was hoping we could stick to looking for it all the way to the top floor.
Let’s just use it as an excuse to be on the floor.
Are you sure?
Oh, I’m certainly sure.
Why so?
I think the diamond came loose when I threw it at the wall last night.
What?
Yes, my fiancée was much too interested in my roommate.
How about we forget the floor for now, and let me interview you for my position?
Has my blouse made that much of an impression on you?
No, it’s the whole package that interests me!
My lucky day.
Mine!
This is my entry into Australia's once a month #furiousfiction competition. Check it out.
