A poem exploring the feeling of being invisible
Sometimes
Sometimes,
I just get tired.
Of trying so hard
Of pretending that all is well
Of pretending.
Sometimes,
I just come undone.
It starts as a thought
Or a feeling.
A discomfort
In the pit of my stomach
Or a hollowness
In the middle of my chest.
Then,
Before I know it,
I'm too far gone.
Too far under
For the possibility of air
Too far under
For the breath of life.
Sometimes,
I just want to be seen
Or acknowledged
Maybe even embraced.
But sometimes,
The concept eludes me.
Is that why
So many of us
Want to be rich and famous?
Do we need
To build a platform
So impossibly high
Just to be seen?
A platform
That only has room
For a lucky few, anyway?
Is the climb to the top
Worth the risk
Of an unending fall?
Or worse yet,
What if you find
That you were never there
To begin with?
And
If you were never there to begin with,
Then
Who are the people
Actually
Looking at?
Who is really seeing you?
Sometimes,
I feel like a ghost.
A mirage.
I'm here
But I'm not here.
I fade into the background
Of your periphery.
You may think that something's there
But in the end,
It was just your imagination.
I'm so tired
Of trying to be a person.
I've put on just about every hat I can think of
But in the end,
None of them work.
In the end
I'm still just me:
This watery, see-through figure
That slips
Right in-between your fingers.
I wave my arms,
But you don't see me.
I make noise,
But you don't hear me.
I'm literally standing
Right here,
But you see right through me.
Soon enough,
It will be as though
I never existed
And all will go back
To the way it was.

I wrote this poem while I was dealing with the aftermath of ongoing trauma that I experienced throughout 2024. Writing is my 'creative therapy' and an access point to deeper thoughts and emotions. It is becoming a central component for healing and expression.
