The Hero Who Saved a Hero

by June Sargent

He found himself alone in the basement one night crying - with a loaded gun in his hand.

Detroit firefighter Matt Dunaj, after saving lives for more than seven years, found himself on the brink of taking his own life.

Work stress, financial problems and other factors had contributed to his present state of mind.  As he prepared to pull the trigger, Mia heard the click and rushed immediately to his side.  She frantically licked his cheek.

That profound act of unconditional love from his golden doodle saved Matt’s life.

The next morning Matt made the wise decision to drop his gun off at his brother’s house and then sought help with Behavioral Health Treatment and Recovery.

With his new lease on life, Matt is now encouraging others to seek help when feeling overwhelmed. Even heroes are after all - just humans.

Matt credits Mia for saving his life and spends more time walking the beach with her these days. He considers her to be more than just a pet.  She is his hero.
