A personal journey
What Faith Is To Me
by Lana Marie

Faith is often described as the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). In its simplest form, faith is complete trust—trust in something or someone, especially in the divine, even when we cannot see or touch it. It’s not just about belief; it’s about a deep, unwavering conviction that transcends the need for proof.
I’ve heard people talk about how we trust things we can’t physically see: the beating of our hearts, the flow of electricity when we flip a switch, or the belief that a chair will hold us when we sit down. But the kind of faith I’m reflecting on is different. It’s not just the trust in physical, tangible things—it’s the faith in something greater, something unseen yet profoundly real: faith in God, in His promises, and in His guidance through life.
My journey of faith didn’t begin with the knowledge of God that I now hold dear. I didn’t grow up learning about Him, and the concept of faith was foreign to me. I watched people around me—friends, strangers, characters in movies—express their trust in a God they couldn’t see. I wondered if this kind of faith could be real, and I longed to believe, not because I had proof, but because I saw something in others’ faith that was compelling. It was a hope, a kind of yearning for something bigger than myself.
It wasn’t until I went through a series of personal struggles that my faith truly took root. I endured two abusive marriages, and when I became a single mother, I had no idea how my life would ever get better. I felt lost, unsure of what my future held. But in that season, I clung to a scripture that became my lifeline:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” — Jeremiah 29:11-13
Those words carried me through some of my darkest moments. When I didn’t know where to turn, I held onto the promise that God had a plan for my life—a plan that wasn’t meant for destruction but for hope and a future. I began to seek Him, to pray, and to trust that He was listening. And He was. Looking back, I can see how He provided in ways I never could have imagined. He gave me the strength to rebuild, the courage to keep going, and the faith to believe that better days were ahead.
Faith is not a formula; it’s an individual journey. Everyone’s path is different, and for me, it was a process of choosing to believe, even when I couldn’t see the outcome. It’s easy to look for evidence, but sometimes faith grows in the silence, in the waiting, and in the decision to trust when nothing makes sense. And it’s in those moments that I realized: God is real, and He answers in ways only He can.
I’ve heard others say, “I’d rather believe in God and find out later that He wasn’t real than not believe and find out He was.” This perspective resonated with me, especially in my earlier years. But over time, my faith has evolved from a leap of hope to a steadfast trust in a God who has shown His faithfulness time and again.
For the past 39 years, my faith has been my anchor. It has carried me through trials, guided me through decisions, and strengthened me when I felt weak. It’s not about seeing—it’s about believing. And through every season, I have learned that God’s promises are true, His presence is real, and when we seek Him with all our hearts, we will always find Him.
