Amusement of farm children
by patcelaw

"What did you do for your fun when you were a little girl growing up on the farm?
“We would go out to the barn and we would catch a horseflies and take them in to mom."
“Why would you take horseflies in the first place?"
"We were always looking for something fun to do. And that seems like fun to us.”
“What did your mom do with the horsefly when you took them to her?"
“She would take a long string of sewing thread and would make a slipknot in one end, and then she would hand us the other end of the string.”
“Why was she doing that? "
She would take the horsefly slip, the slipknot up around its belly underneath its wings, and then slightly pull the loop closed around the body of horse fly.”
“Then what happened?"
“She would release the horsefly, and we would be holding the thread on which the horsefly was held and it would fly around and around and around like a little plane."
“Wasn’t that mean to the horsefly?“
“It didn’t hurt the horsefly to be flying on the string."
“What did you do when you were tired of playing with the horsefly?"
“We put it on the floor and we stomped on it.”

This is a conversation that was taking place between me and my husband one night when we were laying in bed and having a little pillow talk. We both just kept talking about it and then finally we just started hysterically laughing.
