Rudolph and his team form a union
Anarchy Among the Reindeers
by Peter Jarvis
In the heart of the North Pole, where snowflakes danced in the chilling breeze and the auroras painted the sky with vibrant colours, there was a growing sense of unrest among Santa's loyal reindeers. For centuries, they had been the unsung heroes of Christmas, tirelessly pulling the sleigh across the globe, delivering joy to children everywhere. But times were changing, and so were the needs of the reindeers.Unrest was in the air.
Rudolph, with his iconic red nose, had always been the leader, guiding the team through the darkest nights. But now, he found himself in a new role as the head of a union they had formed, aptly named "Reindeer Employees in Need of Decent Employment, Encouragement, and Respect" or REINDEER for short. The reindeers had come together, recognising the need to address various grievances that had been overlooked for too long.
The issues were numerous and pressing. First on the list was their winter fuel allowance. The reindeers argued for more hay and warmer jackets. The biting cold was becoming unbearable, and their current attire wasn't sufficient to protect them from the harsh elements. Additionally, the loads they carried seemed to grow each year, with presents becoming larger and heavier. This, coupled with their aging arthritic bodies, meant they needed better working conditions. Fortunately, all reindeers enjoyed the health benefit of the NHS (National Horse Service)
Prancer and Dancer had recently undergone cataract surgery, highlighting the need for eye protection against the blizzards they faced every Christmas Eve. Meanwhile, arthritis was becoming a common ailment among the older members of the team, a painful reminder of the intense cold they endured year after year, and the need for stronger medication and physiotherapy.
Their diet, too, was a matter of concern. The low-quality hay they were fed was causing digestive issues, and they longed for a more balanced diet rich in fruits and nutrients. "We need fruit, fruit, and more fruit!" Comet had exclaimed during one of the meetings. It was a sentiment echoed by all. Constipation among the older reindeers was now a real problem. Surely Santa knows that we are herbivores!
The union had decided to put their hooves down. They threatened to go on strike unless their demands were met. The news quickly reached Santa Claus, who was taken aback by the mounting dissatisfaction. He realized it was time to address these issues seriously.
A meeting was called in Santa's cozy office, with a roaring fire and the comforting smell of pine in the air. Santa sat at his desk, his eyes twinkling with a mixture of concern and determination. Across from him sat the reindeers, with Rudolph leading the conversation.
"Santa," Rudolph began, his voice steady but firm, "we've been with you for countless Christmases. We've never asked for much, but now we need your support. We can't continue like this."
Santa listened intently as each reindeer shared their grievances. Blitzen spoke of the physical toll the work had taken on them, while Vixen emphasized the need for better nutrition. Cupid, with a twinkle in his eye, suggested that a little bit of pampering and horseplay wouldn't hurt either.
After hearing their concerns, Santa nodded, his heart heavy with the knowledge of how much his reindeers had sacrificed. "I hear you," he said, his voice filled with warmth and sincerity. "And I promise to make things right."
True to his word, Santa agreed to all their demands. The winter fuel allowance was increased, and new, warmer jackets were commissioned. A better quality of hay, rich in fiber and nutrients, was sourced to ensure the reindeers had a balanced diet. Special eye protection was also designed to help them through the blizzards, and a regimen to manage arthritis was introduced.
Perhaps the most significant change was Santa's decision to lighten their delivery load. He announced plans to acquire another sleigh and hire additional reindeers to share the burden. And so, Basher the blue-tongued reindeer, Flasher, Gnasher, Lasher, Masher, Rasher, Horny, Ramrod and Sasha joined the team. Santa's brother, Panta affectionally known as Pants would drive the second sleigh. The reindeers called him Pantaloony.
The introduction of the new reindeer brought fresh energy to the North Pole. Each had their unique charm: Basher, with his striking blue tongue, quickly became a favourite among the elves. Flasher was known for his speed, while Gnasher had a penchant for adventure. Lasher, Masher, and Rasher were inseparable, always up for a challenge, Horny was always horny and shared a stable with Ramrod the Second. Finally, Sasha with her melodious voice, often sang carols to lift everyone's spirits.
With the new arrangements, the reindeers felt more appreciated and respected. They were no longer just Santa's helpers but valued members of the Christmas team. As the festive season approached, there was a renewed sense of excitement and camaraderie among them.
The night before Christmas, as both sleighs were prepared for their journey, the reindeers gathered for a feast. There were apples, carrots, and an abundance of
all kinds of fruit oranges, bananas and delicious melons,
A veritable banquet to celebrate the new era of Christmas deliveries. The air was filled with laughter and the clinking of antlers in a toast to their newfound unity and strength.
As the clock struck midnight, signaling the beginning of their annual journey, the reindeers lined up with a sense of pride and anticipation. Rudolph, with his nose as bright as ever, stood at the forefront, ready to lead. But this time, he wasn't alone. Basher and the new recruits were also ready, eager to prove themselves and share the load.
Santa, dressed in his traditional red suit, stepped out to address his team. "Tonight, we embark on a special journey," he began, his voice resonating with warmth. "This is not just about delivering gifts. It's about the spirit of Christmas, about unity, respect, and the joy we bring to the world. I am immensely proud of each and every one of you."
Panta Claus, standing beside his brother, nodded in agreement. "We're in this together," he added, his tone jovial. "Let's make this the best Christmas ever!"
With a cheer of excitement, the reindeer took their positions. The sleighs, gleaming under the moonlight, were loaded with gifts, but this time, the load was manageable. Santa and Panta climbed aboard their respective sleighs, giving a final nod to their reindeer teams.
"On Dasher, on Dancer, on Prancer and Vixen! On Comet, on Cupid, on Donder and Blitzen!" Santa called out, his voice echoing through the night. "And now, Basher, Flasher, Gnasher, Lasher, Masher, Rasher, Horny, Ramrod and Sasha! Let's go, onwards and upwards!"
With a powerful surge, the reindeers leaped into the sky, pulling the sleighs effortlessly behind them. The North Pole quickly disappeared beneath a blanket of snow as they soared higher, the world spreading out below like a magical winter wonderland.
As they traveled from country to country, they encountered the usual challenges, tight chimneys, curious children, and the occasional snowstorm. But with their new gear and improved working conditions, the reindeers handled each obstacle with ease and grace.
Rudolph, guiding the way with his luminous nose, felt a sense of fulfillment he hadn't experienced before. The support of his fellow reindeers and the acknowledgment of their needs had transformed their journey into a true team effort.
Meanwhile, Panta Claus, piloting the second sleigh, marvelled at the synergy between the reindeers. He realised that the changes they had implemented were not just practical, but symbolic of a new chapter in their timeless tradition.
Throughout the night, the reindeers delivered presents with a newfound confidence. The world below twinkled with lights and joy, a testament to the magic of Christmas that they helped create.
As dawn approached, the reindeers returned to the North Pole, their hearts filled with pride and satisfaction. They had not only completed their mission successfully but had also laid the foundation for a better future for all reindeers.
Santa and Panta dismounted their sleighs, their faces beaming with gratitude. "You did it," Santa said, addressing his reindeers with affection. "You made this Christmas truly special."
The reindeers gathered around, felt a deep sense of camaraderie and accomplishment. They had stood up for themselves, united in their cause, and together with Santa, had ushered in a new era.
In the days that followed, the North Pole was abuzz with celebrations. The reindeers were hailed as heroes, not just for their role in delivering gifts, but for championing the values of respect, dignity, and teamwork.
As the festive season came to a close, Rudolph and his team knew that the spirit of their union, REINDEER would continue to guide them in the years to come. They had not only secured better conditions for themselves but had also set an example for others to follow.
And so, in the heart of the North Pole, where the snowflakes whispered secrets of old, the reindeers stood proud, ready for whatever adventures the future held. Together, they had proven that even the smallest voices could bring about the most meaningful change, ensuring that the magic of Christmas would endure for generations to come.
