Imagination - a Birthright

by tfawcus

Imagination is a human gift;
at first, we are agape—with wonder filled.
As we grow old, it shrinks from lack of use,
and like our minds, it's apt to atrophy.
It's limited by what we think we know—
established facts, the boundaries—and thus
the world is flat and centred in the sky;
the sun and all the stars revolve in awe;
and monsters guard the fringe of certainty,
consuming those who dare to go beyond.

But are the monsters there to hem us in,
or keep us out? Our heroes are the ones
who slay the shibboleths that hold us back,
who brave establishments that hoard their truths.
They scale the heights of castles in the air,
intent on building knowledge out of dreams,
imagining a better future life.
Were we not born as wide-eyed wonderers,
to fashion substance from our fantasies,
defying logic with our leaping minds?
