The Ballad of Cain

by Chip Whitley

The author has placed a warning on this post for violence.
In fields where first the earth was tilled,
Two brothers' fates were darkly willed.
Cain, with furrows deep and wide,
And Abel, with his flock beside.

Cain offered fruits, his labor's pride,
But Abel's sacrifice was eyed.
The smoke of fat and firstborn rose,
While Cain's unworthy gift, He did oppose.

Jealousy of serpent's seed,
Grew in Cain, a bitter weed.
"Why favor him?" his hate was nursed,
Envy's flame stoked to thirst.

"Let's walk the field," Cain's voice did call,
To Abel, loving, fraternal trusting.
In that field, under sky so vast,
Cain's anger struck, his brother smashed.

The earth swallowed deeply, a silent shift,
Cain's hands, now marked by darkest Rift.
"Where is your brother?" God inquired,
"Am I my brother's keeper?" Cain's defiance transpired.

Cursed to wander, marked by sin,
Yet civilization would begin.
From Cain's line, arts and crafts did flow,
A paradox of progress, the world's finest show.

In cities built by hands of rage,
The first murderer's legacy engaged.
Music, metal, life's advance,
Yet violence too, in equal trance.

So here's to Cain, our first of kin,
Whose act of murder further stained our skin.
A tale of jealousy and test divine,
In every heart, Cain's mark, a silent guest.
