Rondeau

Our Demise

by Patrick Bernardy

In coffins lined with silken breath
and fragrant petals wreathed with care,
our dead grow cold. A vacant stare
knows not of life or mournful sighs,
nor solemn hymns or tearful cries,
but sees with sockets frozen bare.

We will not fear this fate, despair,
and conjure realms to breathe in air!
This Death will come to claim his prize
in coffins lined with silken breath.

The hearth grows dark, there's meager fare
of kindling spirit, spark, and flare.
No more our mind, no more our eyes—
the time is nigh for our demise.
Don’t waste your prayer, but leave us there
in coffins lined with silken breath.
