Hymns in Memory

The Sweetest Fruit

by Verna Cole Mitchell

A fruit, now ripe in memory,
Was seeded like no other
In churches and camp-meeting tents
And voice of my sweet mother.

The songs we sang as little kids
And choruses of youth
Gave knowledge "Jesus loves me"
To firm our faith in truth.

"Beyond the Sunset," sung in church,
Was comfort in our sadness,
And "Victory in Jesus" was
A reason for our gladness.

Recalling husband at my side,
Bright smiles adorn my face,
As with our children standing near,
We'd sing "Amazing Grace."

Camp meeting was a joyous time,
"Love Lifted Me," our song.
We stood on sawdust-covered floor
With each one singing strong.

As Mother went about her chores,
With praise, her heart was full.
She sang about "The Love of God"
And "joy Unspeakable."

From seeds to fruit within my heart,
These wondrous hymns have blessed,
Allowing me to taste His grace
And know His righteousness.
