An example of the devasting effects of relying on AI!
AI and 911
by RFL
My rant is about the way technology has ruined our lives, and even could be responsible for causing deaths. Granted there are benefits to technology like increasing the speed at which one can send and receive messages, but things are getting out of hand. In fact, they are becoming deadly. To make my point I submit the following dialogue:
Background: Mrs. Goodlife (hereinafter referred to as Mrs. G.) is calling 911 to report that her husband is having a heart attack.
Mrs. G: Hello, hello!
AI responder: Please press or say “1” for English and “2” for Spanish. If you speak any other language, you are out of luck!
Mrs. G: ONE!
AI responder: Hello, please tell me the problem.
Mrs. G.: My husband grabbed his chest and fell to the floor. I think he is having a heart attack.
AI: Please submit your ID and passcode.
Mrs. G.: What? I don’t have an ID and Passcode for “911”. Please send an ambulance. My husband is having a heart attack. He can’t breathe!
AI: Please submit your ID and passcode; or, you can chat with someone online and learn how to register. Shall I send you a link for that?
Mrs. G.: What? Send an ambulance. My address is 623 Third Avenue, apartment 3D. Please hurry!
AI: I am sorry. I cannot do anything unless you submit your ID and passcode.
Mrs. G.: I don’t have a 911 ID or passcode. What is this?
AI: I am sorry. Please go to policeservices@gmail.help and input your issue. You can register there.
Mrs. G. No need anymore. My husband is dead. Just send the undertaker.
AI: I am sorry. I cannot do that!
Unfortunately, although now I feel better, neither Mrs. G. nor her husband can make that same statement.
