I'm Sorry My Wish Came True

What’s this? A green wine bottle bobbing on the Potomac. I snapped it up from the swishing water. Shook it. I heard a voice with a southern drawl. “Hey partner, let me out and I will grant you one wish.”

What the heck? I pulled the cork. A red haze rose from the bottle and swirled into a man wearing a ten-gallon hat and smoking a cigarette. He said, “Thank you, mister. What do y’all wish?”

“I want Donald Trump to be elected president again.”

“So shall it be, but only if you promise to be loyal to him and endure all the consequences his governing may bring.”

“I know his actions will only be for the good of our country, as he always says.”

“Yes, yes, your wish is granted.”

Donald Trump won the election and became the president of our country again. I was so happy that the lies and propaganda spread by liberal democrats and most of the media like CNN and MSNBC were not effective. Right-thinking individuals like me relied on the truth-telling Fox News and Truth Social for accurate political information.

After all, Mr. Trump wants nothing but the best for loyal, patriotic citizens like me. He is fulfilling his promise to us white Christians conservatives by helping us get back to our rightful, God-given place on the racial pyramid.

Yes, our country is currently enduring violence under President Trump’s leadership. However, you know sometimes a leader must use violent means, but when he uses it, he reassures us that the ends justifies the means. I commend him for passionately seeking retribution for himself and the patriots who were arrested seeking to overturn a stolen election while engaging in, as the RNC stated, “legitimate political discourse.”

Further, I know he cares about me because I got a tax cut. I didn’t mind that the one-percenters got a much larger one. The man must satisfy the money-men if he wants them to continue their worship of him.

Most of the mass media said Mr. Trump never tells the truth, and he is an adulterer, a woman abuser, and a convicted felon. For a very long time, I knew in my heart that they were not telling the truth about him. I applaud Mr. Trump’s action to punish those who lie about him. He says he is innocent, and I believe him because our Christian Nationalist ministers say he is a good man who supports our religious freedom and beliefs. I like the fact that he has criminalized abortion nation-wide. He is not a cruel man, as some say. I like he is being stern and unyielding, especially when it is in the best interest for our county.

So what if he criticized Senator John McCain by saying, “He’s not a war hero … I like people who weren’t captured, okay?” So, what if he devalues those who become soldiers by calling volunteers “suckers.” He is only telling the truth.

But now that he has been in office for some time, I am wondering if he is truly making our country great again. His decisions are driven by selfishness. He has taken over the Justice Department. He is using the department to seek retribution for every person on his enemies list. He has suspended the first amendment. He has cancelled the right of TV and radio stations to broadcast news until D.J. Vance, his media cabinet minister, has approved their scripts.  

Only a few Republicans are protesting his actions. All of his cronies are keeping their mouths shut and allowing him to do as he pleases. After all, they claim and have passed an amendment to the Constitution stating that as president, he has immunity and can do anything he wants.

I finally realize what commentators and historians had warned, that if Trump becomes president again, our country will no longer be a Democratic Republic. And now I fear they were correct. Trump, with the help of his Republican sycophants, is turning our country into an autocracy. Our democratic rights, beliefs and traditions are being decimated and then their destruction is being upheld by a Trump appointed Supreme Court. A year into Trump’s presidency, Fox News is the only news outlet allowed to broadcast nationwide.

Europe is in a panic because he pulled us out of NATO. At first, I didn’t believe it was to help his buddy, Putin as underground news outlets said. I believed Trump when he said he did it to save Ukrainian civilian lives. I was so happy he did it. So, what, if Ukraine and its people are now part of the Soviet Union.  Putin is right when he claims that Ukraine never was a separate state and had never been a nation. As he says, "Ukraine is an integral part of a triune nationality: Russian, Belorussian, and Ukrainian." He has kept us out of a war with Russia. I trusted his judgment.

But now I am sorry. Those who warned against Trump are being proven correct. His leadership and the consequences of his decisions will not make us great again. Rather, he is destroying freedom, loving America. Trump is proving his son-in- law correct when he said, “My father-in-law has the guts to go as low, lower than any president before him. You shouldn’t even try to make any comparison.”  

I am so embarrassed that my wish for this autocratic dictator to govern our country was granted.  I realized that all people no matter what race, color or religious belief, should have an equal right to vote and to pursue happiness in our country. I now realize that Trump and his cohorts are methodically killing democracy. I’m sorry America. I now see that I made a terrible mistake when I expressed my wish to the guy from the bottle. I should have been more thoughtful about who I wished to be president.
