a 100-word story
My Sister's Cat
by Bill Schott
I was sitting in my sister’s home in Fairbanks, Alaska. I’d arrived from Michigan, looking for a job at the University of Alaska.
Muriel’s cat sat next to me on the sofa. I offered my hand for it to rub, but it sank a claw into my finger and quickly ripped open a one inch gash.
While I shouted and cursed, my sister laughed.
“He’s so territorial.”
Later, after I had stopped the bleeding, I was shown my bed. On the pillow sat the cat.
Having just left the Marines, I knew I could survive a night on the couch.
