The Sandcastle

Rhyme It Contest Winner
Deserted was the beach that early morn
when I first eyed this sun-kissed castle fair.
By rolling, roaring surf it sat forlorn,
and I could only cease my walk and stare.

A child's small hand had formed the towers tall,
one with a cone-shaped roof and crimson flag.
His fingers pinched out windows in a wall
plus tiny turrets. He'd a right to brag!

But fragile art like this is soon destroyed
as sand once dry will crumble, spill away,
or waves wind-pushed ashore it won't avoid.
Then beauty disappears to our dismay.

Short is the life of castles carved from sand
like that of drifting bubbles, brief yet grand.
