lost love

The Raindrop Burns

by Wendy Rappeport

Now she is seventy- a virgin and never wed.
But once the opportunity was there
And she had it in her head
That he loved her too.

She won many dance competitions
And he was her teacher.
She was elegant and slim
And her hair was a feature

She always had her hair styled
For exams and displays.
And her dresses wer fantastic
With flounces and lace.

The most spectacular dance
Was a foxtrot with him
As her partner
And she always dreamed of him,

In her best dreams they were married
Had three children it seemed.
And she woke in distress
Because it was only a dream

She really expected him to ask her
But he wasn't interested
She thought  of marriage
But she was always distressed.

We went away together on holiday
And all of the tour
She played love songs
Of Charles Asnavour.

I could sense the tears in her eyes,
Like burning drops of rain
On her cheeks as she cried
Over and over and then again.

She's seventy now
Never married, no children to love.
And her life is so empty
He had never returned her love.
