Aquinnah

by Erika Seshadri

I’d forgotten how
clouds come down to earth here
as
   a permanent wetness, diffused
   in droplets, blanketing the waves
   at my feet
as
an answer to the ground’s first wish
as
   the aura of air

I’ve been gone too long,
a generation of horseshoe crabs
now skeletal chitin
sunken into sand, but

the beach roses stand proud,
adorned with bumblebees
on tender fuchsia blooms

the surf smells of days gone
as if your great-great-grandfather
is still on the whale hunt
carving birchwood and bone
with expectant fingers

I’ve been gone too long

I’d forgotten how
sand rolls with the sea here
as
   I walk along the shoreline,
bits of me crumbling into the water
like a sandcastle licked by high tide
as
wind spills secrets to the lighthouse
as
   your history can be felt

I wish
you were standing here
instead of me
