for most, family means

homogenous faces beaming around a table

people who possess the same DNA

share the same blood

lifetimes of mutual experiences

unconditional acceptance

for others, family means

closest friends and companions

co-conspirators and confidantes

comrades and colleagues

seasons of shared adventures

a sense of belonging

for some, family means

absent loved ones and fresh sorrow

a palimpsest of complex memories

empty seats around a table

ghosts of love and laughter

solitary tears and resolute perseverance

Family, to me, is simply those we love. Sometimes they are related to us by blood and sometimes by choice. I'm mindful, at this time of year, that some people are painfully aware of lost or absent family members around their Christmas table. I am one of them.

"Something that is homogenous is uniform in nature or character throughout. The general sense of homogenous can be used interchangeably with the word homogeneous (which is spelled with a second e and is pronounced differently). When used in this general way, homogenous is more commonly used than homogeneous. Homogenous is also used in the context of biology to mean corresponding in structure due to either a common origin or a common environment."

"In a word, palimpsest implies layers. Specifically (and historically), a palimpsest refers to an archaic manuscript, usually hand-written on a parchment or vellum by monks or scholars, on which the original writing was rubbed off and new writing was added. This was done because parchment and skin were hard to make and obtain, so resources were reused. But the effect was that beneath the new layer of writing, you could still see remnants of the older layers, usually not legible but clear enough to see that something enigmatic was there before."
