A Halloween Poem: Inspired by a vintage Halloween postcard

Of Black Cats and Pumpkins

by Mrs. KT

On this Halloween night,
When the moon fills the sky,
You may see crazed witches
On their brooms zipping by

They're really quite daring,
But those witches are sly,
When the moon glows too bright,
They need help when they fly!

If they spy a black cat,
Or bright pumpkin nearby,
They will cast a small spell
So these darlings won't cry!

Then black cats and pumpkins,
Who are sprightly but shy,
Will jump upon broomsticks,
And away they all fly

Yes, on Halloween night,
Cast your eyes to the sky
As black cats and pumpkins,
So bewitched, will zoom by!

Lowell Herrero (1921-2015, American)

When Halloween's over,
And the sun rides the sky,
Black cats and bright pumpkins
Upon porches may lie

They'll look to be resting
Or perhaps yawn a sigh;
Should you hear them cackle,
And dare stop to ask why,

They're dreaming of flying,
But take care not to pry;
Their eyes may bewitch you
Though the night has gone by

So don't prod and don't poke;
Only tiptoe on by
Ere they cast their own spell,
And on broomstick you'll fly!

Be sure to remember
When Halloween comes nigh,
For I’ve shared charmed secrets,
And this witch doesn’t lie...

Just a few little notes:
1. I wrote this Halloween offering inspired by the vintage card that is the top photograph of my poem. My mind started to wonder/wander why the artist included a black cat and pumpkin on the witch's broom. And so it began...
2. I am the proud grandmother of three little grandsons. They are a bit too young at the moment for this poem, but I wrote it for Bowdie, Porter, and Jude.
3. Found the glowing photograph of black cats and pumpkins, and I couldn't resist using it in the poem. (I had found a non-glowing rendition when I entered Terry Broxson's contest "Write a Review" about an imaginary poem/short story.)
4. No black cats or bright pumpkins were harmed in this offering.
5. All in good fun...

Happy Halloween!
