A Parent's Nightmare

Missing

by Debbie D'Arcy

He left one sunless day in May
En route for who knows where,
Without a single word to say
Nor plan he'd wish to share.

And that was that, he stayed away,
His silence grew with time
And sadness echoed day by day
With fears there'd been a crime.

So combing woods and ocean floor
In search of one to blame,
They focused then on parents more
And put them in the frame.

They even turned attention to
Your garden newly wrought.
With dark intent, they thought 'twas you
Whilst tears of pain were fought.

But nothing found and tracks ran dry,
The search unearthed no clue.
You prayed with hope raised to the sky
That love would guide him through.

He'd always been a private boy,
Perhaps he needed space
To process why he lacked true joy
And felt so out of  place.

But months would pass, you lost that hope
And sensed he was at peace.
With steadfast will, you sought to cope
But dread would rarely cease.

Though myst'ry still enshrouds his goal,
You strive to bear that load.
The message lives within his soul
And paved along that road.

This nightmare that has battled long
And sees no end in sight -
It feeds your doubts but keeps faith strong
And draws you to its light.

This verse is based on a true story of a friend's young adult son who suddenly walked out of his father's home and has not been seen since. There is no conclusion, no knowing exactly why he would do such a thing other than the fact he had personal issues including depression. All possible leads have been followed with the most traumatic of all being the, admittedly inevitable, police investigation into the family's possible involvement to the extent of searching the garden.
For clarity, I have referred to the missing son as "he"; the police as "they" and the father as "you." I have focused on the father as the parents are separated with the lad living with his father at the time of his disappearance. Both parents are devout Christians and have found some comfort in their faith.
